Pâturage, Brachypodium retusum, Ressource alimentaire, Stratégie alimentaire, Troupeau de brebis
+

2013 - Prospects from agroecology and industrial ecology for animal production in the 21st century
Livestock system, Sustainable animal production, Agroecological principle, Environmental footprint
+

Fossil energy, Energy mangement, Environmental impact
+

At the intersection between livestock farming and the preservation of grassland biodiversity, emerges a crucial imperative to reconcile these two seemingly divergent objectives. This document provides detailed descriptions of the diet composition of cattle and their foraging strategy in highly diversified natural pastures in southern Brazil. The study involved, over the four seasons of 2012, four trained observers to repeatedly monitor the grazing behavior of 30 heifers, totaling 120 animal-days of observation. Surveillance consisted of recording, bite by bite, the plant species and plant parts consumed by the animal during the total duration of both morning and afternoon meals. The results from this research challenge the notion of plant preference among herbivores. Prior to conducting this research, the authors had long heard of the idea that herbivores have immutable preferences for certain plants. Despite decades of research, this concept of preference struggles to explain the actual patterns of herbivore selection.

Trees, Shrubs, Fodder function, Domestic ruminants, Management of forestry, Agro-pastoral rangelands, Arid areas, Afrique
+
Hubert GUERIN et Alexandre ICKOWICZ
In the vast arid landscapes, trees and shrubs are not just solitary silhouettes, but valuable allies for farmers and herders. Farmer ancestral knowledge has turned into a wealth of information for scientists, yet managing these resources remains a challenge. In this communication, the authors describe the multitude functions of sylvo-agropastoral landscapes for domestic animals. They have highlighted the uniqueness of these systems in being composed of both tested exotic species and species capable of providing forage for these animals. However, descriptive and analytical studies and data collected are not sufficient to improve the management of forests and tree species in agropastoral landscapes. It is therefore crucial to integrate traditional wisdom with advance knowledge in science to maximize the benefits of trees in arid regions, which constitutes one of the principles in agroecology.
